Motive still a mystery in Dalton police-on-police shootout
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The South African Police Union (SAPU) are still seeking clarity after two of their own were killed in a shootout with colleagues in Dalton near Greytown earlier this month.
40-year-old Sergeant Celani Gwamanda and 33-year-old Constable Nonhlanhla Mngoma, were gunned downed in an operation by the Hawks and other law enforcement teams, following investigations into a spate of robberies in the area.

Anti-crime teams spotted their colleagues' patrol vehicle in the early hours of the morning. Police allege it was Gwamanda and Mngoma who opened fire first, leading to the shootout.
A jackhammer, break-in tools, an angle grinder and ink-stained cash were found in their car.
Members of the SA Police Union visited the late officers' families on Wednesday.

SAPU president Mpho Kwinika says a number of issues need to be addressed:
"So far not even one person from that department has visited [the family]. The other issue is the shortage of manpower, they want to know what is going to happen moving forward."
Kwinika says they will be taking these issues up with the Police Ministry.
