Tyrese James was knocked down at the beginning of last month while jumping out of a taxi.

The Grade 11 pupil suffered extensive head injuries and died two weeks later in hospital after being in a coma.

His mother, Cheryl Govender says the police officer who was on the scene didn't do his job.

Govender says multiple witnesses have told her the driver was seen throwing liquor bottles out of the car.

"There is no evidence to prove that he was drunk. No evidence was taken - nothing was done on the scene. The man was told to jump in his car and get away as quickly as possible. My child had no choice - his last words to my mother was 'I'll see you later, I'm coming home early so you can help me'. He left the house and never returned. We expect the police to do their duty and let the person who did this pay the price."

Police have confirmed they're investigating the officer who attended the scene.

A case of culpable homicide is also being investigated.
