This has been revealed by a survey carried out this month by management and tech consulting firm, IQ Business.

It found contributing factors included financial constraints, breakdowns in close relationships, retrenchments or caring for a loved one.

The organisation says its results support the World Health Organisation's findings that one trillion dollars' worth of productivity is lost each year globally due to employee depression, stress, anxiety and other mental health concerns.

Nadine Rex is the head of governance at IQ Business.

"The results revealed that 92 percent are concerned by the state of South Africa's economy and the possible implications it could have on themselves and their loved ones.

"54 percent reported that they were experiencing financial strain and over 69 percent were mentally affected by the state of poverty on the news and around them."

Rex says the findings are an indication that employers need to be aware that the state of well-being of workers might be different now compared to before the coronavirus pandemic.
