An environmental activist has called for more transparency
from local authorities on issues plaguing the province's beaches and water.
South Durban Environmental Alliance co-ordinator Desmond D'sa has called for more transparency from local authorities on issues plaguing the province's beaches and water.
This after a video surfaced on Tuesday afternoon showing blackened water gushing out below one of the piers at Umhlanga Beach.
It prompted concern it might be sewerage.
D'sa says according to locals the blackened water has been gushing into the ocean since last week Thursday - posing a serious health risk.

"What I'm getting from people is that they are rushing to doctors and all that there and nobody is coming to assess and talk to the. We don't want people dying, we want government to be open and show the results of how do they mean that the water and the beaches are open and they analysed the water and everything is okay."
D'sa says he believes the water is sewage and other chemicals that have been illegally dumped.
"That will lead to high levels of E. coli and it will have an impact on people because they swimming and drinking and eating the fish.”
