The accident happened this evening in the northbound carriageway of the N2 highway on Umbogintwini Hill.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha is on the scene and says the school bus went through the Armco barriers, rolled and landed up in the veld.

He says there are a number of injuries.

"So far, we've got two people who are critical, the rest sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Paramedics and firemen are working fervently here at the scene to try and stabilise them," he said.

Botha says they are appealing to motorists to stay clear of the area.

"We ask people to please take another route at the moment. We have to narrow the lanes down to give emergency services access to this accident," Botha added.

It is the second bus accident today on the south coast involving school children.

Earlier today, more than 50 pupils were hurt when their bus overturned on the R603 in Umbumbulu.

The Department of Sports and Recreation has confirmed in a statement that those injured in the Umbumbulu crash were part of the Umgungundlovu District team, who had been on their way to take part in the the Provincial Indigenous Games in Margate.
