They began work at the site yesterday after getting new leads on the decades-old case.

Van Rooyen, who killed himself before police could get to him, is believed to be behind the disappearance of at least six girls nearly 30 years ago.

An excavator was brought in today for the dig but its operation was cut short when the machine hit a concrete slab.

A K9 unit was then dispatched along the site to see if the dogs could pick up anything.

That search turned up nothing.

Officials then resorted to manpower with shovels used to dig - they came across some bones but they were later identified as animal remains.

A second excavator arrived on the site for the work by the forensic investigators here to continue.

It's thought one of the girls who went missing is buried under a pipeline at the beach.
