The Royal Rehabilitation Hospital says healthcare and emergency response professionals are held to a higher standard because of the life-threatening situations they're confronted with every day.

Speaking in the wake of World Trauma Day, which was on Sunday, the hospital's Shubnum Ismail says because of their passion, they often go above and beyond the call of duty, putting their own lives at risk.

"In most instances, we don't celebrate or acknowledge them enough until something affects us personally.

"Recognition should be given every day as they leave their families and homes daily; they are also placing their own lives at risk.

"We are not sure they are going to come homes, so when they pull out their uniform, they are indirectly saying goodbye, I am not sure I am going to be coming home if they are going to be going out to a scene or a call of a burning building or a crash. It is really frightening."
