More needs to be done to protect flood relief funds, warns Corruption Watch

Corruption Watch says the country still doesn't have appropriate preventative systems in place to track the allocation of funds for KZN flood relief.
The cost of the KwaZulu-Natal deadly floods is estimated to be in the billions.
Corruption Watch's Karam Singh says citizens need to continue to demand accountability, so the funds do not end up in the pockets of the corrupt.

"I think it is important in order to safeguard funds that have been put aside for disaster relief. We have systems in place that allow us to monitor and track the allocation and spending of those funds.
"So that's what we talk about when we talk about transparency. It's about ensuring that there's publication of information about what money is being put aside per disaster relief and how they plan on spending that money."
President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to set up an oversight structure to ensure all funds allocated to KZN are channelled in the right direction.

There are concerns the flood relief spending could see a repeat of the Covid-19 scandals, which saw the misappropriation of millions of rands meant for the sourcing of personal protective equipment.
