More than 1 000 caught for drunk driving over Easter

More than 1 000 motorists in the country are in trouble with the law.

They were caught driving while intoxicated by officers who've been manning South Africa's roads over Easter. The Road Traffic Management Cooperation's Simon Zwane says drunken driving remains an issue.
"It is the end of the month which means people have money. Those who have not gone to church are sitting around drinking and get into their vehicles and drive," he said.
"Our officers are out on the roads in every province, every Metro and town we have traffic police officers," Zwane said.
KZN spokesperson for Transport, Kwanele Ncalane, says the repercussions of driving under the influence are severe.
"From our side we arrest them, depending on what the courts say. Some of them are getting fines while some are in custody as we speak," he said.
