Mooi River without power after substation set alight
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Residents, schools and businesses in Mooi River in the Midlands have been plunged into darkness following a fire at the town's main electricity sub-station.
The sub-station was set on fire last night. The Mooi-Mpofana Municipality's Corporate Services offices were also torched.
Municipal Manager Max Moyo inspected the damage earlier.
"People will stop at nothing to destroy the municipality. If you look at it - they got in there and set a tyre alight inside the substation where there are incoming high voltage cables from Eskom. Both, Eskom and the municipal cables have been badly damaged including some of the transformers," he said.
Moyo says the municipality's priority right now is getting power restored, saying the massive repair work could take several days.
He says it's unclear at the moment who started the fire.
"With all this, you start wondering. There have been no protests of late - we thought things have subsided. When you look at it, there would have not targeted the Corporate Services Department, especially with offices where files are kept. I do suspect that this has to do with employment," he said.
