Mom believes son's assault in Phoenix was racially motivated

The mother of a teenager who was assaulted at a garage in Phoenix says the incident, which they believe was racially motivated, has left them fearful of entering the area again.

Nosipho Nzimande says her 18-year-old son Thabiso and a colleague were delivering personalised T-shirts on Monday night and stopped at a local garage.
Nzimande says when Thabiso exited the shop, he found a group of men assaulting his colleague.
"When he came closer to the car, asking what was happening and trying to speak to them, they did not answer him. They did not respond to him. They just punched him on the face. They punched him all over.
"He fell and they used their feet to kick him on the face and they were wearing safety boots."
Nzimande says her son is recovering.
She says she's since spoken to Thabiso's colleague to find out what happened.
"He told me that there's gentlemen that came to him while he was park and said to him he drove badly and he asked them when and how because I have been parked here for quite some time now?
"Then they changed their statement and asked what was he doing at night in that area. When he tried to tell them, then they started punching him and what he wants in Phoenix.
"Judging by the words they used and asking him what is he doing in Phoenix, I would say it is racial. Why would they kick him for that."
KZN police have confirmed a case of common assault was opened at Phoenix Police Station.
