Mogoeng apology 'sends clear message' - Africa4Palestine
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Human rights group Africa4Palestine has welcomed former
chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng's apology.
Mogoeng has apologised for his controversial remarks on the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Several lobby groups took him to task over the comments.
Recently, the Judicial Conduct Appeals Committee found that he was in breach of the judicial code of conduct when he spoke about South Africa's foreign policy towards Israel during an online seminar hosted by The Jerusalem Post in 2020.

Mogoeng, who previously said that as a Christian he is under obligation to love Israel and to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, wrote a three-page letter saying he's been forced by the law to issue the apology.
Africa4Palestine's Muhammed Desai says he stated that he did so because the law forced him.
"We accept this version because the law did force him to apologise. It is a landmark apology which chose that even the chief justice is not above the law and even he can be forced to apologise."
"The message is clear, South Africa is in support of international human rights even if Mogoeng Mogoeng is not, that our leaders and senior official and judiciary must not bring their controversial views into the public."
