The Moerane family has set down Sunday for the funeral service of former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane.
Moerane was pronounced dead at Milpark Hospital on Wednesday evening, a week after being involved in a horrific car crash.
Some details of the accident have also emerged over the past couple of days.
It's understood the crash left Moerane in a critical condition but was able to give some account of what happened.
While conscious, family spokesperson Mike Maile confirmed Moerane told the family he hit a rock, lost control and overturned on the Golden Highway, south of Johannesburg.
Condolences have since been streaming in from all corners, with the political fraternity sharing sentiments of a deep loss.
Speaking outside Moerane's home in Bryanston, Maile said the family is distraught.
"They are in distress, but they are supporting each other," said Maile.
Family had started to gather at Moerane's home in preparation for the funeral.
ANC officials, as well as state officials were also among the bereaved seen in Bryanston.
This includes Gauteng MEC for Cogta Lebogang Maile and Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse, who is Moerane's successor.
"We agreed that a memorial service would be held tomorrow [Friday] in Alexandra. Prior to that, the city as announced that there would be a wreath-laying ceremony at the accident scene.
"The funeral will be on Sunday at Kwabhekilanga Sports Grounds, starting at 9am until 11am where we will then depart for the Fourways Memorial Park," Maile added.
