Moerane Commission witness Thabiso Zulu shot in PMB

Political parties in the province say
they are concerned over what they say is the lack of, or inadequate protection
for whistleblowers and witnesses.
The parties have been reacting to this weekend's attempted assassination of Thabiso Zulu, who testified during the Moerane Commission into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Zulu was shot and wounded at Copesville in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
He and slain Umzimkhulu councillor Sindiso Magaqa were friends.
Zulu had not received protection despite a recommendation by the Public Protector for it to be arranged for him urgently.
ANC KZN spokesperson, Ricardo Mthembu says they will find out why this didn't happen.
"It is within our interest to then know why some people are not provided with the security and what is the plan to protect those who want to come forward and assist the law, so that those who are alleged to be involved are brought to book," he said.
DA leader in KZN, Zwakele Mncwango says the lack of witness protection will put potential whistleblowers off.
"It means those who have information will never come forward with information and expose corrupt individuals, because they know when you expose corruption you risk your life,” he said.
EFF KZN chairperson, Vusi Khoza says this will further perpetuate the culture of corruption.
"It's going to create a culture of impunity, where people know that they can just steal and loot, if they get caught, they can then kill the witnesses and whistleblowers," says Khoza .
