Nqaba Mkhwanazi believes this is what led to the murder his friend and fellow councillor, Mbhekiseni Khumalo in Pongola last year.

Mkhwanazi has told the commission Khumalo was selected through party structures despite numbers favouring another individual.

"When the ANC selects a ward councillor - it chooses four people put forward by the community. Once the four are chosen, a group of people known as the screening team are brought in. They screen the candidates and conduct interviews. Two names are shortlisted and presented before regional leaders.

"Regional leaders then select their preferred candidates but the region doesn't always select the person based on the score from the interviews and this causes an outcry. The structures that voted then get upset and can become hostile towards the selected individual," he says.

The commission is probing political violence in KZN.
