"The country is not yet [in a] third wave, but when we look at the provinces, they will be getting onto a third wave at different times.

"At this point, the Free State is already technically in and Gauteng is a matter of concern. The numbers are increasing very fast. So we need to work together to make sure  we reduce the spread of infections."

The Minister was speaking at a home for the elderly in Krugersdorp - where the facility's residence were being vaccinated.

Monday marked the start of Phase 2 of South Africa's vaccination campaign.

The Ministry is targeting over 60s first and approaching old age homes is part of goverment's strategy to help the drive along.

Mkhize says some of the elderly who are not in care facilities and who not registered will be traced through the social grant system.

"Citizens in the townships, villages and in the small towns who are not found in the old age homes."

Some KZN elderly citizens say they're relieved they'll finally be getting their jabs.

Eric Mjoka, who's 62, says this is their last resort to make sure they don't contract the virus.

"Vaccination is the only thing to help us as the disease is roaming around, killing people. So if we get the vaccination, it will be much better."

76-year-old Flora Xulu says she's happy their turn has now come.

"I'm very glad. I am waiting for the vaccination. I am not scared. I've been waiting for this vaccination for a long time."
