Mkhize 'only realistic candidate' for ANC in KZN – analyst
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Political analyst Dr Imraan Buccus says Zweli Mkhize is most likely the only realistic ANC presidential candidate for the party in KZN.
"Even though maybe a distant reality in terms of being a challenge to Cyril Ramaphosa. I think in the absence of any other choice, Mkhize becomes the imperfect choice for KZN and I think what would be interesting particularly for us as observers in KZN is to see whether Zuma eventually endorses Mkhize."

The provincial structure on Tuesday officially endorsed the former health minister as its preferred candidate to lead the ANC.
It's backing Mkhize over Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, despite Mkhize being embroiled in the corruption allegations involving KZN-based company, Digital Vibes.
Buccus says the move is not surprising.

"After she narrowly lost out to Ramaphosa in 2017 and subsequently joined his cabinet, she has lost support in many parts of the country and it is clear that KZN cannot carry her on their own.
"On the other hand, some like Dr Zweli Mkhize can muster support if not limited support, but he can muster support from other provinces also. So for KZN, it seems like it's anything but Cyril Ramaphosa."
