MK Vets: We don't want handouts but to be part of economic mainstream
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans are hoping a two-day summit in Durban brings them a step closer to economic empowerment.
The liberation fighters have repeatedly called on the government to make good on its promises for jobs, housing and education for their children.
Frustrations boiled over when a number of MK vets occupied newly-built housing units in Pietermaritzburg's Aloe Ridge area - vowing to take what is owed to them.
The two-day economic summit, supported by government and stakeholders in the private sector, wraps up at Durban's ICC on Friday.

The Association's Nonkonzo Molai says it is time former liberation fighters are acknowledged.
"We don't want to be beggars in general. We don't want to go requesting handouts. So it brings pride for you to be able to be part of the economic mainstream.
"There is an opportunity on the one hand for targeted beneficiaries. So it is very important that we bring all these stakeholders together."
