MK Vets distance themselves from Durban CBD looting

MK Vets have denied any involvement in the looting and torching of foreign-owned stalls in the Durban CBD yesterday.

Two people were hurt and taken to hospital after criminals targeted immigrant informal traders.


Several stalls were set alight.


The association has condemned xenophobic attacks - saying they are willing to work with police to bring those responsible to book.


MK member Zibuse Cele says they are tired of being linked to incidents related to foreign nationals. "Some of us are situated in Nkandla at the ex-president. Some of us are at work, some of us are schooling or at home. No one was there."

The South African Police Service says officers are keeping a close eye on the Durban CBD following an attack on foreign nationals yesterday.


Police say they're investigating a case of public violence and no arrests have been made.


The South African Human Rights Commission says it's disturbed by what has happened. It says its officials are meeting today to discuss the ongoing attacks on foreign nationals in the country.

Nomvula Maneli is with the Africa Solidarity Network says migrants are living in fear.


 "What happened yesterday is not new there is nothing that the municipality does not know. So it's becoming a problem for people to be standing up for their rights because they are exposed to more criminals who want to attack them individually."
