MK Party urges Electoral Court to uphold IEC registration
Updated | By Bulletin
The uMkhonto we Sizwe party has urged the
Electoral Court to uphold its registration with the Independent Electoral
Commission.
The ANC and former president Jacob Zuma's new political party are in a legal showdown in Bloemfontein.
The governing party initiated the court action.
It argues that the MK party's registration was unlawful due to improper gazetting and supplementation of its application when the initial application was rejected.
The ANC also accuses the MK Party of using a name associated with it.
The ANC legal counsel, Tshidiso Ramogale, argues Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Mawethu Mosery's decision to register the MK party was irregular.

"There are questions regarding the legality of a party on the particular ballot and whether that party should be there in the first place.
So we say that's not an issue that the court should turn away from. It's the very thing that this court was established to decide, to protect free and fair elections. To protect the right to franchise and importantly withhold the rule of the law."
