Mixed reaction as COP26 wraps up
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
South Africa's chief negotiator at COP26 in Glasgow has welcomed the outcomes of the climate change summit.
The summit, described as one of the most crucial in the history of mankind, wrapped up this past weekend.
The final text at the end of negotiations urged nations to accelerate efforts to "phase down" unfiltered coal and "phase out" inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.
South Africa also secured loans and grants, worth R131 billion from developed nations to finance its migration away from coal.
Maesela Kekana says even though there were some issues, they're pleased with the final outcome.
"We know that in Paris we agreed to the temperature goal of two degrees while pursuing efforts to achieve the 1.5 degrees.
"This really required all of us to put our thinking together and to that extent, we agreed to establish an annual mitigation ambition work programme, which is coupled by a ministerial roundtable to access progress on implementation."
Nhlanhla Sibisi, a campaigner at Greenpeace Africa, says they're disappointed with the results - adding that they'd expected more.
"We saw the like of India and China disagreeing with it, and they had to change the text to reflect a watered-down version of what we wanted to see
"But we would hope through national determinations and national plans these countries will implement mitigation measures that will allow us to stick to the 1.5 degree."
