Minerals Council says Implats accident ‘stark reminder’ of safety measures

Minerals Council South Africa has urged the country's mining giants to re-examine and boost their safely programmes and initiatives.
It's been commenting after the deaths of 11 miners at Impala Plats' operations in Rustenburg.
A conveyance system, hoisting workers to the top of the underground shaft, malfunctioned and plunged some 200 metres on Monday.
More than 70 were injured.

The council's Alan Seccombe says the tragedy's a stark reminder that there can never be a lapse in vigilance regarding mine safety.
"The mining industry mourns with the family, friends and colleagues of those who died and who were injured.
"This is a very tragic accident, and it does give a terrible blow to our ambition of ending 2023 with fewer fatalities than last year when the industry recorded 49 fatalities, which is the lowest on record."
Officials are still investigating the cause of the incident [Platinum has put on ice the operations throughout the country.
The mining industry has recorded 41 fatalities so far this year, compared to 44 deaths in the same period last year.
