Impala Platinum suspends operations after 11 killed in accident
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
The decision follows last night’s accident at its mine in Rustenburg, which left 11 workers dead and 75 others injured.

An elevator bringing the workers back up to the surface malfunctioned and crashed.
Impala Platinum says the company will focus on mourning the mineworkers and communicating with the families.

Metalworkers’ union NUMSA says some of the victims are their members.
"NUMSA deeps its revolutionary red flag to mourn the lives of these workers,” says spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola.
"They are just not numbers. They are breadwinners, and they have households who love them and depend on them.
"We send our deepest condolences to their family and friends for this tragic loss of life."
