Mineral Resources head to KZN village after 'gold' found
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Mineral Resources officials will head to the southern KwaZulu-Natal village of KwaMachi after construction workers claimed to have discovered gold stones in a quarry.
Hundreds of people have gone to the village, hoping to strike it lucky. However, there has been no confirmation from officials yet.
Umuziwabantu Local Municipality says the workers, who were busy upgrading the main road, found what appeared to be gold, shiny stones.
The municipality says samples have been taken and sent for testing but people have been flocking to the area to dig for gold themselves. And it has proved to be a dangerous hunt for some.
The police's Nqobile Gwala says men were crushed by a rock while searching in the quarry on Tuesday.
"Two people were injured when a rock fell on them at KwaMachi area in Harding. They were taken to hospital for medical attention and no case has been opened," she said.
