Millions of Rands lost to KZN drought

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says the drought in KwaZulu-Natal has already caused damage to the tune of R500-million.

The department will from today be conducting roadshows across the hardest-hit areas of the province, in order to create more public awareness about the drought.

Water officials say Hazelmere Dam, which provides water to the eThekwini and Ilembe Municipalities, as well as to Sembcorp Siza Water, is currently sitting at around 30%.

The department's Lennox Mabaso says the important message that will be spread to communities is that every single drop counts; because no one is certain when the rains will come.

"It's very, very important that we treat water conservation as a lifestyle. It can no longer be an event. There must be targeted campaigns to make sure that it's embedded in the subconscious mind of every citizen, and every second they think about water they must think about conserving it," he said.
