Mid-term budget speech: Data costs to come down
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
There are plans to bring down data and internet connectivity costs. Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, drew attention to high telecommunications prices in the country saying government will work on bringing these down from next year.
Mboweni delivered his maiden mid-term budget speech in Parliament yesterday.
He says the intention is to capitalise on cost reduction by creating more jobs in the sector.
“In communications, the proposed policy for the licensing for high demand spectrum has been gazetted,” he says,
“Frequencies to enable high speed internet, will be auctioned early next year. Steps will be taken to reduce data costs and improve data quality. Recently concluded ‘power patches’ agreements will create an estimated 61 000 jobs and enable investment of R56 billion”.
On the country's debt and plans to rebuild government institutions, Mboweni has said that we can not continue to borrow at this rate.
