The contractors wrote a letter to the utility demanding a meeting with management - to address their labour related grievances yesterday afternoon.

But the utility says they didn't show up at the meeting.

Mhlathuze Water spokesperson, Siyabonga Maphumulo says some of the issues raised have either been addressed or are currently being dealt with.

"Whilst we maintain the position that our doors remain open for negotiation - what we cannot compromise on is the rule of law. This is why we have approached the courts to seek an interdict against the workers so that they cannot intimidate those that want to work," he explains.

Maphumulo says it's crucial that workers are made aware that the strike is illegal and unprotected - saying the no work, no pay principle will apply.

The strike has affected water supply in parts of Mhlathuze. The city's Mdu Ncalane says contingency plans are in place.

"Affected areas include - parts of esiKhawini are some parts of esiKhawini, Enseleni and Vulindlela. Some of the valves have beenopened."

Ncalane says water has since been restored to Vulindlela.
