Mthobisi Mncube was arrested in 2015 in a separate case

Mthobisi Mncube was arrested in 2015 in a separate case.

He was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition which would later lead to his conviction for the murder of a taxi association chairperson in Alexandra.

At the time of his arrest, police also confiscated a bullet magazine with various calibre of ammunition from his home in Malvern.

The ammunition confiscated from Mncube then was subsequently compared to the one found on Senzo Meyiwa’s murder scene.

This took place in July 2020.

“The bullets that were found and confiscated from accused three, Mthobisi Mncube in 2015, match those found on the Senzo Meyiwa crime scene,” said Mangena.

“The bullet recovered from the Meyiwa crime scene, was the one that was fired on this gun.”

Two shots were fired on the day that Meyiwa was killed.

One hit the floor of the kitchen, while the other perforated Meyiwa’s chest.

Mangena said at the time when Meyiwa was killed he was standing while the kitchen door was partially open.

“What happened is, he is in a standing position. The entrance wound is on the chest at 1.34m while the exit is at 1.2m . Now if you look at the bullet hole on the door it’s 1.2m. Now if you take the deceased and put him on the crime scene facing inside with the door behind him.

"Now if we close the door, the bullet was supposed to hit the door in a straight angle. The irregular shape was caused by a bullet that was not spinning but tumbling. Either up and down or side to side.”

Meyiwa was shot and killed at his then girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s residence in 2014.

Witness testimony has stated that two unknown intruders entered the Vosloorus home on 26 October in an armed robbery, fatally wounding Meyiwa.

One of the intruders has been identified from the dock as accused two, Bongani Ntanzi.
