Merebank resident cry foul over sewer waste stench

Merebank residents say they're tired of putting up with a stench that's been affecting the community for months.

They say the foul odour's due to the recycling of sewer waste at a water treatment plant.

Resident, Keshne Naidoo, says they've endured the smell for nine months now and want urgent intervention.

"The stench has been extremely bad from the morning to the evening. And the community have been trying to get together and have meetings. People are getting sick and it's bad.

Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman says he's approached the plant to get a better understanding of the issue.

"The sewer that's coming through and creating a smell is coming down from the sewer lines into tank number one," he says.

"And when this tank is full, they have other two tanks that are discharging. Tanks two and three are not actually full to get rid of that scum. That scum is exposed and the wind is blowing it into the residents."
