In the past two weeks, four people have died with the feuds affecting matriculants from the Bhambatha, Macingwane, Mjonge and KwaZenzele High Schools. The department of Community Safety's Sipho Khumalo says they have begun intervening in the conflicts in the area.

"We have arranged for a meeting to take place tomorrow in the area whereby all key stakeholders concerned will meet to see how we can better resolve this conflict that has destabilised the area. We hope that a positive outcome will be achieved," he said.

Meanwhile, while the national Department of Education says it is aware of some of the challenges that KZN has faced in the first week of matric exams - it is relatively pleased with the progress made.

A huge number of learners sat for the English, Accounting and Maths exams this week.

Muzi Mahlambi is KZN Education spokesperson and says they are pleased with exams thus far.

"On Monday the pupils will be writing a Mathematics paper again, and we are very confident that things are going to go very well. The weather has also been favourable to us," he said.
