Sinegugu Myeni’s family and friends have been paying tribute to the 28-year-old woman during an emotional funeral in Utrecht.

Her remains arrived in the country on Wednesday after she passed away at the airport in Cebu, on the 10th of July.

She had been waiting to board a flight home to recuperate after falling ill.

The provincial government was instrumental in efforts to repatriate her remains.

Speaking at her funeral on Bersig Sportsfield on Saturday, Myeni’s mother Lindiwe promised to look after her daughter.

"You are a hero my little girl. Nothing could stand in your way once you have set a goal for yourself. You were loved. You had dreams of a bright future for yourself, that's why you were brave enough to cross many ocean. You lived this life patiently for 10 years trying to achieve this, but death cheated you. Thank you for leaving me with your beautiful daughter that looks just like her mom," she said.

Pray Barson spoke on behalf of friends.

"She was a fearless and curious person, one of the kindest people I've met. What I admired most about her, she always showed up as her authentic self. Words can't describe the loss her passing has lived within us. She will, however, continue to live on through our memories. To her mother and daughter, I pray you guys find peace," Barson said.
