Medical school scam not a qualification issue: SAQA

The SA Qualifications Authority says it will be difficult to determine what the consequences will be for qualified health professionals who allegedly bought their places to study at UKZN.

SAQA has been commenting after three people were arrested by the Hawks for allegedly selling places at the university's medical school.

CEO, Joe Samuels says they'll work with the Council on Higher Education to discuss a way forward.

"The person is not a threat to the patient. There were professors that looked and checked that everything is fine. So it's not a qualification issue. If there's another scenario playing itself out, what we will do is interact with the Council on Higher Education and look at the system as a whole to determine how this could have been averted," he said.

Raids were conducted by the Hawks on the suspects' homes and businesses - after investigations linked them to the sale of places at the faculty.

The suspects appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of corruption. They were granted R40 000 bail.

Meanwhile, Health MEC Sbongiseni Dlomo has described it as a callous act - saying the department will not allow such acts to compromise the reputation of the university.
