MEC wants to meet with freight industry following Escourt crash

Transport MEC, Bheki Ntuli wants to meet urgently with members of the freight industry following Monday night's deadly crash near Escourt.

Fourteen people lost their lives after two trucks and a taxi collided on the N3.


According to preliminary reports - the minibus was travelling in between two heavy-duty vehicles when the truck that was in front jack-knifed.


Ntuli says he's calling for a meeting to address the high number of crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles.


He says in the last few roadblocks; authorities have been targeting trucks.


The department says the MEC will also receive a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing investigations into the cause of the accident.


The probe will also focus on the roadworthiness of all vehicles involved - among other possible factors.


All but one of the victims who died was female.


A woman who was in the taxi was critically injured and taken to hospital.


Both truck drivers survived the accident.
