MEC to take action against forced child marriages
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The MEC for Community Safety the abduction of young girls for the purpose if marrying them without families' approval must stop.
Bheki Ntuli has convened a summit on gender-based violence in the Harry Gwala District.
He says GBV and femicide are rife in the district - and many young women there face a bleak future...
"When kids are at school in grade 7, they go to functions.
"They don't come back to their original houses because they will be taken by boys and their families would take them as wives," he says.
"Now that alone tells us that we as the government especially as the department of Community Safety as Liason, have got to stand up."
He says the SAPS, safety forums, traditional and religious leaders are involved in the summit and will help implement its resolutions.
