MEC seeks clarity amidst Engen refinery closure talks
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Economic Development MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube says they’re trying to seek clarity, following media reports that the Engen refinery plant on the Bluff, south of Durban, is to shutdown for good
Economic Development spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says she’s asked the CEO of Trade & Investment KZN to meet with management and look into the reports which suggest that the refinery will close shop in 2023.
It's said the refinery will then converted into a storage facility.
"The intervention forms part of the implementation of the economic transformation and reconstruction plan which is aimed at turning around business post COVID-19", Sibiya said.
"The MEC has indicated that Trade & Investment KZN has adopted a business support, retention and extension program to support businesses that are weak.
The 66-year-old refinery is the third largest in South Africa.
