Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environment Affairs in the province says they've made a proposal for the TERS scheme to be extended.
He says considering the current state of the country, the tourism sector is unlikely to recover in the next few months.
MEC Ravi Pillay says thousands of jobs are at stake and an extension would assist a number of people in the industry.
Last week, the Unemployment Insurance Fund confirmed that discussions are taking place within the Nedlac process to extend Covid-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme.

"There were 650 businesses in the tourism sector that were the beneficiaries of the R200 milllion national allocation and each got R50,000," he says.
"So that wasn't enough and we want to supplement that but to extent that we ask to identify priorities within the sector for that kind of relief."
