MEC outlines turnaround strategy to improve pass rate

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education's turnaround strategy to improve the province's overall pass rate includes surprise visits to schools some of which have already taken place.
MEC Peggy Nkonyeni presented the strategy at Truro House in Durban today.
She says more than R2-billion has been set aside for infrastructure in a bid to improve schooling in the province.
Nkonyeni says dealing with the drug problem and community protests is also part of the strategy.
"What we normally do - we encourage district directors to identify some time in their school calendar and make sure that they cover all those hours that were wasted during those public protests through bootcamp and through other intervention programmes," she said.
The 2015 National Senior Certificate pass rate dropped by 9%.
Officials say they want to increase the pass rate by 10% this year.
