MEC condemns 'horrific' Nongoma child abuse video
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza says she has been left shocked and horrified by a case of child abuse captured on camera.
The following story is not suitable for young or sensitive listeners as it contains information about an assault on a child.
The video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows a woman beating her child with a shoe.
The department's spokesperson, Mhlabunzima Memela says the incident has sent shockwaves through the community of Nongoma, where the clip was taken.
This child is recovering in hospital.
He says the 24-year-old mother was taken into custody by police and the Ulundi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit this week on a charge of assault.
She appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate's court on Tuesday.

Memela says community members alerted the police.
"There are two children that have been taken to hospital while their mother is arrested. It’s a very horrible and painful incident because you'd expect the mother to use other means of disciplining the children if ever, they have done anything wrong.
That is why we always encourage our communities. There are other acceptable means of instilling discipline in our children rather than that kind of assault.”
