Mchunu reiterates need to strengthen crime intelligence
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
Minister Senzo Mchunu has again acknowledged that the police's crime intelligence service needs to be strengthened.
He says police are aware of the spike in kidnappings, incidents of extortion, and the high number of undocumented migrants in the country.
The topic of intelligence gathering grabbed headlines recently when police teams descended on a secret military training camp in Mpumalanga and arrested 95 Libyan nationals.
The group's case was postponed until later this month.

Mchunu says that while there is a strong focus on curbing crime, it's concerning that police cannot confidently say that violent crime has been brought under control.
"It's murder in terms of the types of crime that we are worried about and the proliferation of guns, illegal firearms but also legal firearms - we are worried about.
"Together with that, we are extremely worried about the extent to which the country has the availability of various drugs. You can now go to a community, and they know what drugs are dominating. Murder and drugs are our priority, but not that alone."
