Fikile Mbalula visited the violence-ridden Durban hostel this afternoon.

"I encourage all people with valuable information, not to fear. Police, under my supervision, will place candidates whose lives will be in genuine danger immediately into witness protection programmes. We must assist the public as a whole by coming forward with any information you may have. Many of these crimes of murder involve corruption and abuse of state resources," he says.

Mbalula was accompanied by eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede and Deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer.

More than 90 people have been killed at the Umlazi hostel since 2014.

Earlier, the police minister stopped at Umlazi Police Station where he met with the station's management behind closed doors.
