Mbalula: No place for LGBTQI, women discrimination in taxi industry
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
Transport minister Fikile Mbalula says violence towards and the rights violation of women and members of the LGBTQI community has no place in the industry.
He says operators found guilty of such conduct will be penalised or sanctioned as an operator. Mbalula delivered the keynote address at the closing of the three-day National Taxi Lekgotla, taking place in Boksburg yesterday.
The Lekgotla brought together the mini-bus taxi industry, metered taxis and e-hailing providers to intensively engage on the future of the industry.
The minister says the adopted declaration is a testament of the industries determination to tackle challenges confronting it.
"The taxi industry has proclaimed it will not tolerate anyone using violence as a means to achieve their self-serving ends", he said.
"This is a bold commitment and a determination by the industry in ensuring compliance with the country's labour laws", Mbalula said.
The Lekgotla has called upon all stakeholders in the industry to forge a compact aimed at transforming the industry.
