Mbalula launches R1bn taxi relief fund
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says the taxi industry has been severely hit by the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

Mbalula says the loss of revenue during the lockdown for various transport modes posed a challenge for the economy as public transport operations were halted and services restricted.
Mbalula made the remarks during a media briefing on the taxi industry relief fund launch in Gauteng.
The R1 billion fund is aimed at helping the taxi industry get back on its feet.
”Most sectors opened up on level 3, but demand for public transport remained very low. Almost 20% of the taxi industry recorded a total loss of income, especially the long distance and cross-border operators as a result of the closure of international borders and the prohibition of inter-provincial travel.
“It is a harsh reality that the transport sector has not escaped the devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
