eThekwini mayor says ‘water supply interventions’ completed in February

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kuanda says engineers are working around the clock to fix the issues affecting water supply to Phoenix, Verulam, oThongathi and other areas in the north of Durban.

The city has maintained some of the problems are due to flood-damaged infrastructure.

Kaunda says the northern aqueduct has not been performing optimally.

He says the input volumes into Verulam's Mount View Reservoir have been constrained, impacting other downstream reservoirs.

"Various interventions are being implemented to check possible leaks on the 32-kilometre-long trunk main. Other interventions include replacement of all air valves in the trunk main and changeover of the bulk supply."

Kaunda told a briefing on Thursday afternoon that supply to some reservoirs has been shut.

"These tests will be able to tell us where we are losing water, which results in the shortage of the water supply in Durban North, Phoenix, Umhlanga and Verulam.

"These interventions are expected to be completed in the second week of February. However, some areas may have their water supply restored earlier as interventions are progressing."

Kaunda adds that things have been moved around.

"Yesterday our technical team met with Umngeni-Uthukela Water to finalise this process. What they changed over effectively means reservoir 3 which has been supplying the northern aqueducts, will now supply the southern aqueducts. Reservoir 2 which has been supplying the southern aqueducts is now supplying the northern aqueducts."
