Gumede has denied allegations she prevented reporters from covering a press conference convened by the DA to discuss corruption.

Mayoral spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede says the mayor respects the media as an important cog in the country's democracy.

"The mayor would like to categorically reject the information that she ordered the Metro Police to chase away journalists or prevent journalists from coming into the City Hall. She has asked the management of the City Hall to provide her with a report on what happened, to go through the report and apply her mind once the report has been tabled before her," Gumede said.

He says the mayor is committed to towards working with members of the media.

"The mayor supports the need for freedom and freedom of association. So each and every party has a right to do its activities without any disturbance. Similarly, last week there was a gathering of the IFP at the Durban City Hall. There were no disruptions reported."
