Mauritius lifts travel ban on SA
Popular tourist destination Mauritius has lifted its travel
ban on South Africa, more than a month after it was implemented.
The Mauritian government closed its doors to some southern African countries, including SA, after news broke of a new Covid-19 variant.
Omicron was first reported in SA and Botswana in late November, triggering a wave of fear across the world.
The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) confirmed the ban on Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe would also be lifted, effective on Friday.
This means commercial passenger flights from these countries to Mauritius can resume.

“We are very pleased that South (Southern) Africans can once again travel to Mauritius,” said MTPA director, Arvind Bundhun.
“Covid-19 has placed significant pressure on all nations to do the right thing and we thank South Africans and the South African travel industry for their patience in this regard.”
Bundhun added strict Covid protocols would remain in place.
“Sanitary protocols throughout the Mauritius hospitality industry remain at the very highest standards, ensuring that the local community and international guests are afforded maximum protection from the virus.”
