The Class of 2023 has achieved an overall pass rate of 82.9%, a 2.8 percentage points increase compared to the previous year.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the overall results in Gauteng.
The Free State was once again the top achieving province with an 89.3% overall pass rate, while Limpopo showed the most improvement with a 7.4% increase.
KZN came in second with a pass rate of 86.36%. The minister hailed the country’s Basic Education system, saying it has improved steadily since 1994.
“Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily disrupted this upward trajectory, strategic measures were put in place to safeguard the opportunity for learners to take their National Senior Certificate examinations,” Motshekga said.
“Remarkably, the nation achieved more NSC passes, and Bachelor passes and passes with distinctions than ever before.”
