Matric 2017: MEC visits Maritzburg school amid exams

The class of 2017 has put the first major paper behind them.

Grade 12s across the country sat for English Paper One this morning which was a two-hour exam. 


Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana stopped by at four schools in the Umgungundlovu District this morning to observe the wiring of exams. 



One of those schools was Laduma High School, near Pietermaritzburg, where Dlungwana said his department was hopeful the province would exceed their target of increasing the matric pass rate by 10%.

He says several programmes were put in place to ensure pupils were ready for finals.


"Since the beginning of the year, we've focused on progressed learners to ensure that we provide support to them. What we have not done in the past, is focus primarily on those that are potential high-flyers. This year, we focused on progessed learners, the morning and afternoon classes, as well as Saturday classes," he says.


Several first and second additional language papers are being written in this afternoon's session.
