Massmart, Saccawu to meet in attempt to resolve strike
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Management at Massmart says it will meet with the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) to discuss workers' grievances after a strike by its members.
Employees downed tools indefinitely on Friday over pay and want staff, who were retrenched, to be reinstated.
The union represents workers at retailers like Game, Makro and Builder's Warehouse.
Massmart's Brian Leroni says some 23% of their staff downed tools on Friday.
"This level of participation dropped significantly over the weekend to around 12 percent of the overall Saccawu membership within the Massmart Group.
"The results here is that this together with the deployment of contract workers to our stores has meant that they have operated smoothly throughout the strike."
