Mass funeral service for Sunwich Port crash victims
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
The five people killed in a crash at Sunwich Port near Port Shepstone, will be laid to rest after a mass funeral service this Sunday.
Simphiwe Nxumalo, Bhekani Sengane, Lindiwe Skhosana, Manozi Chili and Nkosinathi Shibe died in the crash involving a minibus taxi and a truck on the R102, in rainy weather on Friday morning.
All of the victims had been travelling in the taxi. Several other people were hurt in the collision.
The service will take place at the Nkanini Sports Grounds. Private burials will then be held at the victims' respective homes.
Umzumbe municipal spokesperson, Trevor Khanyile says the five victims lived relatively in close proximity to each other, making it easy to arrange the mass funeral service.
Khanyile says government is assisting the families with preparations for the service, and will foot the bill.
"We have met with the families and have reached a consensus saying we will have a mass funeral. All preparations to ensure it's a dignified funeral for the victims are going well," he said.
Investigations into the crash are continuing.
