Mashatile remains mum on deputy president prospects
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
ANC deputy president Paul Mashatile says he does not know if President Cyril Ramaphosa will appoint him as his second-in-command.
This comes after incumbent David Mabuza resigned as a Member of Parliament on Tuesday, a move which saw him also vacate his office at the Union Buildings.
Mashatile was elected at the ANC's deputy president at the party's December conference, and is a shoo-in to take over from Mabuza.
Mashatile's tongue seemed to have been firmly in his cheek during a question-and-answer session with the media at mineworkers' union NUM congress on Wednesday night.
"Firstly, let me say that I have not been told that I am going to be deputy president so I don't know. We will cross that bridge when we come to it, when we get to that bridge, we will cross it within days."
President Ramaphosa is expected to reshuffle his cabinet within the next few days.
